JISC; Review of timetabling and resource management
Print | Email | Digg this story!
Challenge
JISC’s strategy highlights the importance of using ICT in both the management and administration of higher and further education institutions, and in the support of teaching and learning. In order to contribute to both these aims, JISC commissioned Oakleigh to conduct a study of administrative processes relating to timetabling and resource scheduling. The study investigated common challenges and use of technology relating to these processes, and explored links between timetabling and curriculum development and delivery.
Solution
Oakleigh consulted with senior nominees from a range of representative bodies within the higher and further education sectors to produce straw-man generic models for timetabling and resource scheduling processes, and to develop our understanding of the associated challenges and use of technology. Input from two suppliers of timetabling information systems was also sought at this stage, allowing the study to be informed from both a ‘supply’ and ‘demand’ perspective. Following this initial consultation, a series of eight regional workshops were conducted throughout the UK with representatives of HEIs and FE learning providers.
Outcome
The output from this work was a report to the JISC executive, designed to be accessible to a range of interested organisations. The report included a summary of the current approaches to timetabling and resource scheduling, an analysis of current issues and challenges, and use of technology. The report highlighted the building blocks necessary to achieve successful practice, allowing institutions to consider the implementation of these.
Client testimonial:
To successfully predict and plan for the future we need to fully understand the requirements of the communities we serve. Oakleigh has a talent for getting to the nub of what is needed, drawing out the issues that have true relevance to the successful development of our work. (JISC e-Learning Programme)
