University of Newcastle

Detailed analysis of the student experience

Challenge

The University of Newcastle commissioned Oakleigh to carry out a survey to implement a systematic collection and analysis of students' perceptions of their general university experience. The main objective was to use the results to:

  • Understand the key drivers and satisfaction levels of different groups (including under-represented groups) studying at Newcastle, and provide useful data to recruit students.
  • Improve the services and support offered to students, to deliver teaching and pastoral support of the highest quality, and so maximise retention and levels of satisfaction.

Solution

To ensure the success of the survey it was vital to establish what students regarded as important and what they would prioritise. For this reason focus groups (with second year undergraduates) played an important part of the design process for the questionnaire, and helped to establish student buy-in.

In addition, Oakleigh worked closely with the University's Student Opinion Working Group (which comprised members of the academic and management staff, and representatives from the Student Union) so that the results of the survey were also relevant to the University's priorities and strategic aims.

Outcome

The survey, which had a response rate of almost 40%, provided the University with:

  • Detailed data for the formulation of action plans with an indication of priority issues to address, including issues relevant to recruitment.
  • Enhanced understanding of the student population and its priorities and major concerns.
  • Baseline data for comparison in future surveys.

Initial analysis provided the University and the Union Society with 'quick wins' to ensure students saw positive results from the survey; following which a detailed report of the findings was presented for action.

"The Oakleigh team were highly co-operative, flexible and offered expertise on a complex area."
